Agricultural Science syllabus approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
General Objective of JAMB Syllabus for Agriculture
The aim of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination syllabus in Agriculture is to prepare the candidates for the Board’s examination. It is designed to test their achievement of the course objectives, which are to:
- stimulate and sustain their interest in Agriculture
- Acquire basic knowledge and practical skills in Agriculture
- acquire the knowledge of interpretation and the use of data
- stimulate their ability to make deductions using the acquired knowledge in Agriculture, acquire the knowledge of interpretation and the use of data
Structure of the Syllabus
The syllabus is organized into five major sections, each focusing on a core area of agriculture:
- General Agriculture
- Agronomy
- Animal Production
- Agricultural Economics and Extension
- Agricultural Technology
Section A: General Agriculture
This section introduces foundational agricultural concepts, including:
- Meaning, scope, branches, and types of agriculture (subsistence and commercial).
- Importance of agriculture to individuals, industries, and national development.
- Agricultural ecology, ecological zones of West Africa, and environmental factors.
- Basic genetics, Mendel’s laws, cell division, and crop/animal improvement methods.
- Farm inputs and their uses.
- History of agricultural development in West Africa.
- Roles of government and non-governmental organizations in agricultural development.
Section B: Agronomy
This section focuses on crop production and soil management, covering:
- Rock and soil formation, soil properties, and soil profiles.
- Soil water, irrigation, drainage, and conservation practices.
- Soil fertility, nutrients, fertilizers, and deficiency symptoms.
- Land preparation, tillage methods, and plant forms and functions.
- Plant growth, reproduction, and propagation methods.
- Cropping systems, planting patterns, and plant density.
- Crop husbandry for major crop groups such as cereals, legumes, tubers, fruits, oils, fibres, and beverages.
- Pasture and forage crops, floriculture, weeds, crop diseases, pests, and forest management.
Section C: Animal Production
This section addresses livestock and aquatic production systems, including:
- Classification, breeds, distribution, and uses of farm animals.
- Animal anatomy, physiology, and reproduction.
- Animal nutrition, feeds, ration formulation, and deficiency diseases.
- Livestock management systems and animal health.
- Parasites, disease prevention, and control methods.
- Fisheries, wildlife management, and beekeeping (apiculture).
Section D: Agricultural Economics and Extension
This section emphasizes the economic and social aspects of agriculture, such as:
- Factors of agricultural production (land, labour, capital, management).
- Basic economic principles: demand, supply, and production functions.
- Labour and farm management practices, record-keeping, and insurance.
- Marketing of agricultural produce and marketing channels.
- Agricultural extension services, methods, challenges, and solutions.
Section E: Agricultural Technology
This section focuses on tools, technology, and innovation in agriculture, including:
- Farm surveying, farmstead planning, and surveying equipment.
- Simple farm tools, machinery, and implements.
- Mechanization and sources of farm power.
- Processing and storage of agricultural produce.
- Introduction to biotechnology.
- Application of information and communication technology (ICT) in agriculture.
- Basics of agricultural research and statistics.
Overall Emphasis
The syllabus places strong emphasis on:
- Practical application of agricultural knowledge.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Relevance of agriculture to economic development and food security.
- Understanding modern agricultural practices alongside traditional systems.
