JAMB Art Syllabus: Key Topics to Study 2025

Art syllabus approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

General Objective of JAMB Syllabus for Art

• The aim of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) syllabus in Art is to prepare candidates for the Board’s examination.
• The syllabus is designed to test candidates’ achievement of the following course objectives:
  • Exhibit knowledge of the fundamental elements, principles, and terminologies of art
  • Show knowledge of the historical dimensions of art, with emphasis on Nigerian arts and crafts
  • Demonstrate knowledge of artistic techniques, processes, use of materials, and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Display aesthetic awareness of the environment, and understand the meaning and functions of art in society

Section A: Types and Basics of Art

Students learn that art has different types:

• Visual art like drawing and painting
• Performing art like music, dance, and drama
• Literary art like stories and poems

They also learn:

• Art elements such as line, color, shape, and space
• Art rules like balance and harmony
• Common art words and meanings

Section B: History of Art

Students learn about:

• Very old art from long ago
• Art from Greece, Rome, and Europe
• Famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci
• African and Nigerian art traditions
• Nigerian crafts like pottery, weaving, carving, and beadwork
• Nigerian artists, art schools, festivals, museums, and galleries

Section C: Making Art

Students practice:

• Drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts
• Using computers for simple art designs
• Learning about perspective (making drawings look near or far)
• Using and caring for art tools like brushes and pencils
• Making simple tools when needed

Section D: Enjoying and Using Art

Students learn to:

• See beauty in nature and buildings
• Know what art means and why people make art
• Understand how art helps society, culture, and learning
• Learn about art jobs like painter, sculptor, designer, and photographer
