Biology syllabus approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
General Objective of JAMB Syllabus for Biology
- The aim of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) syllabus in Biology is to prepare candidates for the Board’s examination.
- The syllabus is designed to test candidates’ achievement of the following course objectives:
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the concepts of the diversity, interdependence, and unity of life
- Account for the continuity of life through reorganization, inheritance, and evolution
- Apply biological principles and concepts to everyday life, especially to matters affecting living things, individuals, society, the environment, community health, and the economy
Living and Non-Living Things
Students learn:
- The difference between living and non-living things
- Parts of plants and animals, like cells and organs
- How small cells grow into big living things
Plants and Animals
Students study:
- Plants such as mosses, ferns, and flowering plants
- Animals like insects, fish, birds, and mammals
- How plants and animals adapt to live in their homes
Food and Nutrition
Students learn:
- How plants make food using sunlight
- Why animals need food
- Healthy food groups like carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins
- Why a balanced diet is important
Body Functions
Students learn how the body:
- Moves food and air
- Breathes in oxygen
- Removes waste
- Grows and reproduces
Movement and Growth
Students learn:
- How plants move toward light and water
- How animals move using bones and muscles
- How seeds grow into plants
Senses and Control
Students learn about:
- The brain and nerves
- The five senses: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin
- Hormones that help control the body
Environment and Nature
Students learn:
- About soil, water, air, and living places
- Food chains and how animals depend on each other
- How humans should care for the environment
Health and Safety
Students learn:
- Common diseases and how they spread
- Clean habits like washing hands
- How to protect nature and wildlife
Heredity and Change
Students learn:
- How children look like their parents
- Why people are different from each other
- Simple ideas about genes and inheritance
