Geography syllabus approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
General Objective of JAMB Syllabus for Geography
- The aim of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) syllabus in Geography is to prepare the candidates for the Board’s examination.
- It is designed to test their achievement of the course objectives, which are to:
- Handle and interpret topographical maps, photographs, statistical data and diagrams and basic field survey
- Demonstrate knowledge of man’s physical and human environment and how man lives and earns a living on earth surface with special reference to Nigeria and Africa
- Show understanding of the interrelationship between man and his environment
- Apply geographical concepts, skills and principles to solving problems
- Understand field work techniques and the study of a local area in the field
Maps and Map Skills
Students learn:
- Different kinds of maps
- How to measure distance and direction on a map
- How to find places and features on maps
The Earth and Nature
Students learn:
- The Earth, the Sun, and other planets
- Land shapes like mountains, plains, and rivers
- Volcanoes and earthquakes
- How wind and water change the land
Water and Weather
Students learn:
- Oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes
- Weather and climate
- Why rain, wind, and sunshine are important
- Simple ideas about climate change
Plants and Soil
Students learn:
- Different types of plants
- Soil and how plants grow in it
- How people can damage or protect plants and soil
Environment and Safety
Students learn:
- Natural dangers like floods and droughts
- Problems caused by people, like pollution
- How to care for and protect the environment
People and Settlements
Students learn:
- How many people live in places
- Villages and cities
- How people move from one place to another
Work and Trade
Students learn:
- Farming, factories, and services
- Transport and communication
- Buying and selling between places
Nigeria and West Africa
Students learn:
- Nigeria’s land, people, and resources
- How West African countries work together
